The Misfits

John Huston - 1961
It starts fine, with nice long takes in a wider format that allow Gable and Monroe to light up the screen, great to watch the stars. Huston's camera is as dull as ever, but the aspect and take length allow a little contingency.
The second half is verging on the unendurable; along with the dull beyond belief direction, we have Arthur Miller's script. It is simple a Miller play, and he had great moments as a playwrite, but on screen it is incredibly portentous (and there's nothing else but the script with Huston!), meaningful words and actions all. Unreal people playing with unreal horses waiting for each other to say their big meaningful lines. The script would be great to study on its own, but has nothing to do with the images.
