Hail The Conquering Hero

Preston Sturges - 1944
This is a powerful distillation of Sturges' conception. I would also not like to give the impression of negativity about Stuges' direction; it is at worst well-done, and at best there are some fine classical moments. The very opening shots, tracking across the locale to the bar, a nice Hawsk-esque (well, closer, not following anyone, not the same teleology, but anyway) touch.
I also like everyone peering into the frames, stuffing themselves in to get a word in. William Demarest' aggressiveness is also sharp and tough, while being very funny rather than annoying.
What is Sturges' point here? Obviously a crack at the idiotic militarism (and made in 1944!), against the hero worship. If there is a positive thesis, it's that such things downgrade actual heroism; which can be a pretty weird thing.
Again I notice mistaken identities, carried on, turning into positives, and changes of mind.
