Only Angels Have Wings

Howard Hawks - 1939
This comes across as a key picture in an auteur study of Hawks. Low key, lowlight, it has Hawks' extremely long scenes, slong with a slow pace in so far as narrative deveolopment that Hawks always seems to be sidint towards. It also has male comradeship, solidarity among the work troops, and redemption with the men, as key themes. The women, of course, get in the way, and dissappear for long periods.
The sound design here is stunning; stuck in the dank rooms, we hear the rain, the outside, in the deeply atmospheric mis-en-scene. Those long shots are just soaking. A great late night film, overlooking Cary Grant being a little clean... you can't criticise Cary Grant.
