Le Jour Se Leve

Marcel Carne - 1939
Rather good, very Carne and studio. Use of two shots, often long, with some nice blocking. A little theatrical, and some cuts where the staging could have made them unncecessary. Also, the symbols a tiny bit clunking.
However, some excellent, beautiful images. Of the train in the mist. Simply, a beautiful mis-en-scene photographed in a classical manner. Flashback used nicely, wonderful idea for a story. Rather too short, a little underdeveloped. Ripe for a proper remake. Genuine attempt to go beyond melodrama, with downbeat mood and attempt to connect to labour, which may not completely tie up but really deepens the film. A pretty wonderful film really, Gabin and his women are swooningly beautiful, remarkably clean (tradition of quality). Real poetic realism.
