The Angelic Conversation

Derek Jarman - 1987
Projected at way less frames than shot at. Headeache inducing. Images of darkness and playing with light. Indeed beautiful in an old fashioned sense on their own, no doubting of that. Attempt to make a plastically beautiful cinema always to be respected.
Moves to normal projection give the uncomfortale feeling that the low frame rate is really hiding slightly empty images. Lack of determination in the images; pretty abstract 'men-kissing', 'a man with a weight' etc. As images, fascinating. But don't really allow any dialogue, or understanding. Slight tendency to stand and gawp. I feel like a philistine, but I can't help but think 'pretentious'. Perhaps I will see the light.
